Unplugged In The Park (June 19, 2011)

According to Matt "Organic" Jones from 99X, last night's Unplugged In The Park might have been his favorite. An impressive feat for the music artists, considering the Park Tavern has been hosting Unplugged for 9 years! Local Atlantan Kelly McFarling started off the night hypnotizing the audience with her sultry voice. Ryland Baxter kept with the Americana/bluegrass theme of the night with his endearing songs of life and love. Simple. Homegrown. I could picture the two artists humbly playing at a country backyard wedding. However, the main band David Mayfield Parade, hijacked the audience's attention with acrobats, Elvis hipshakes, and rapid upside-down guitar playing which can only be described as awesomely awkward. Lead singer David Mayfield bemused the unsuspecting crowd with Zach Galifanakis antics and persona of uncertain confidence--even going so far to look similar to the actor with loveable chub and a grizzly beard. Mayfield did his own rendition of Lady Gaga by lying on stage, cradling his guitar, and kicking out strums. Second upright bass lady player of the night (first being Baxter's bandmate, Stephanie) held her own with a Patsy Cline voice on "Noreen," and the band took their musical talents to another level singing "Chocolate Easter Bunny" a capella. Songs like "Rye Whiskey" and "Looking For Love" embodied the folk roots of moonshine drinkin', banjo playing', simple life. Already known through bigger names like The Avett Brothers and Josh Joplin for Mayfield's Grammy-nominated song writing skills, it is not an if, but WHEN the newly created band will take on bigger stages. True to their name, the show was a spastic parade of energy and personality. I look forward to their next show in Atlanta.

Also, follow Mayfield's little sister, Jessica Lea Mayfield whose new single "Blue Skies Again" will be performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
